This rifle to replace similar models French light, M Chauchat and Benet 1909, obsolete. It aimed to create a portable weapon semiligera, halfway between a heavy machine gun and a rifle, with an acceptable weight and great firepower. Fire could operate in automatic, semiautomatic and selective fire. It used to equip each infantry platoon of one or two men armed with a BAR, usually men of strong constitution, given the greater weight of the weapon, (8.8 kg).
With this weapon was a strength of fire, ideal for the advancing infantry and very useful for use against enemy vehicles or against bunkers.
The cartridge used, it would be 30-06 (7.62) Springfield, in packs of 20 bullets, for a rate of fire of 550 to 600 d / pm. At a speed of 860 m / sec, and a range of 1500 yards.
John Browning, tried in February 1917, his weapon in a public act before 3000 spectators and senior military. Such was the success of the show, that in May 1917 and officially approved, manufacturing for the military. During the First World War 85,000 units were manufactured.
In July 1918, comes the BAR to his first assignment, to be used in France for the 79th Infantry Division.
In 1931, it adopted the BAR by the forces of the FBI. In May 1934, was used to mow down the car and kill the famous robbers Bonnie & Clyde in Louisiana, with 167 being the bullet holes.
The U.S. Bar Browning was a weapon requested by most European armies, and manufactured under U.S. patent, Sweden, Belgium and Poland.
