Death of Major Richard D. Winters



On January 2, died Maj. Richard D. Winters,
lieutenant, captain and more the famed Easy Company of the 101 Airborne, which was made famous by the HBO series "Band of Brothers."
Richard D. Winters, "Dick" was born in Lancaster (Pennsyvania) on January 21, 1918. Attended college and graduated in economics in 1941. He enlisted in the army on August 25, 1941 and was selected for officer training in April 1942, having to attend the course at Fort Benning officials. On July 20, 1942, he graduated with the rank of lieutenant and calls for its entry into the newly created body of paratroopers, joining the 506 Regiment at Camp Toccoa, where she would be promoted to the rank of lieutenant as executive officer under the command of Captain Herbert Sobel.
In June 1943, are annexed to the 101st airborne, and are loaded onto the cargo ship "Samaria" for England, where they will be stationed in Aldbourne, for training for the upcoming European invasion.
Captain Sobel, will be removed from command of Company "E" Easy, conflicts with the non-commissioned officers, and was replaced by Lt. Meehan.
In the morning of June 6, 1944 (D Day), at 1.15 hours, Easy Company, will be dropped on Normandy, Lt. Meehan have the misfortune to die with his men, being down its C47, which is automatically placed Winters command of the company. Grounded
Winters, outside the designated area, is the task of organizing their group and look for their troops disrupted by the proximity of St. Mere Eglise, having to go into combat in Sant Marie du Mont.
One of the most notable actions Winters, would be making a German battery Brecourt Manor, near Le Grand Chemin. For this action he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross and promoted to the rank of captain.
In September 1944, entering the command of the 2nd battalion of the 506th Rg, during Operation Market Garden. Be in the invasion of Holland, where his leadership notice when he led a group of 20 soldiers of Easy cia, against a quota than 200 enemies, with only two wounded and one killed in the attack.
During the Ardennes offensive, December 16, the 101st Airborne, Bastogne is intended as support troops, taking Winters lead Easy Company in the defense of the town of Foy. For these heroic actions were congratulated the troops of the 101, and Winters was promoted to the rank of Major. Later
27 and April 28, 1945, Winters and 101, releasing the Kaufering concentration camps. The May 4th
participate along with the 3rd Armored div, 3rd Infantry and the Ninth Div Lecleck, making the spa town of Berchtesgaden, Hitler's summer villa.
At the end of these actions, the 101 will be quartered in Germany, as an occupying force. Later on August 1, are sent to Auxerre (France), where they are prepared for shipment to the front of the Pacific, where they are kept out by the end of the war, two weeks later.
At the end of the war, Winters, went to work at a company of nitrates, the family of his companion and friend Lewis Nixon, but the outbreak of the Korean War in 1951, Winters asks for reinstatement and is accepted for training the Rangers. At the end of the conflict, Winters opened his own business, riding a small pig farm in Pennsylvania, along with his wife Ethel, with whom he had two children.
Sunday, January 2 2011, Richard G. Winters, died and was buried with full honors on January 8.

Stephen Ambrose's book, "Bands of Brothers", Winters and Easy Company, are turned into myths, being brought to television screens by the famous HBO series of the same name, produced by Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg.
